About IDRB

The Irrigation Design and Research Board (IDRB) serves as the central design organization of the Irrigation Department under the Government of Kerala. Established vide Government Order G.O.(MS).No.24/86/Irrgn dated 14-08-1986 and headquartered at Vikas Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram, IDRB functions under the leadership of the Chief Engineer (Investigation and Design). Its primary responsibilities include the design of irrigation structures such as dams, canals, and cross drainage works, as well as the surveying and preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for large and medium irrigation projects. Additionally, IDRB contributes to dam safety initiatives and hydrological data management across the state. IDRB's activities are supported by Kerala Engineering Research Institute (KERI) at Peechi, and Field Studies Circle (FSC) at Thrissur.

The Kerala Engineering Research Institute (KERI) stands as one of the leading institutions of its kind in India. It plays a crucial role by offering valuable services that address the demands in areas such as Investigation, Testing, Hydraulic Model Studies, Consultancy, Training, Quality Control, and Research & Development, particularly in the fields of Civil Engineering and Water Resources Engineering.

FSC, which specializes in hydrology and climate studies, is committed to remain at the forefront of technological advancements by integrating modern tools such as GIS-based water resource mapping, e-office systems, online Hydro-Meteorological data monitoring, and collaborative technology platforms.

Looking ahead, IDRB aims to broaden its research scope to include structural analysis and design. This planned expansion will involve theoretical investigations through mathematical modelling to predict structural behavior under various loading conditions and stress scenarios. Additionally, research will focus on performance evaluation of existing structures to ensure compliance with safety standards and to identify opportunities for enhancement. With a strong focus on innovation and efficiency, IDRB continues to enhance the scientific and technological base of water resource management in Kerala.
