Irrigation department is involved in water distribution from the existing completed projects and several Minor Irrigation Schemes including Lift Irrigation schemes across the State. The department plays a central role in irrigating 4.66 lakh hectares (gross) in Kerala. We have 19 completed Irrigation schemes and 4 projects under different stages of execution. - Irrigation reservoirs and canals are widely used for drinking water supply now.
-
Minor irrigation schemes being carried out throughout the state includes
- Lift Irrigation Schemes,
- improvement of existing lakes and ponds, diversion schemes for natural streams,
- prevention of salinity intrusion in rivers, drainage works to paddy fields,
- construction of check dams, vented cross bars, sluices.

flood damage control works including river training and eco restoration .
- The department is responsible for protecting the Sea coast from beach erosion. This is achieved by protecting the coast by the construction sea wall, groynes etc. at selected areas.
- Another important activity of this department is the Inland Navigation work to provide a state water way connecting Neeleswaram in the North to Kovalam in the South.
